Community Outreach

Community Initiatives in Virginia and Maryland

You don't have to look far to see that the Washington, DC, Metropolitan area, is not immune to the current economic situation that our nation faces. Right in the midst of prospering communities, there are people struggling to make ends meet. Like Jesus, we must meet them where they are.

Virginia

Since March 2009, we've held a monthly outreach at the Greene Hills Estate Apartments located in Springfield, VA. Support from with the Greene Hills Estate management staff is critical. We could not serve and build relationships within the community without their partnership.

This outreach includes food distribution and family activities. The food is donated by Food for Others, Northern Virginia’s primary safety net for those needing food when an emergency strikes and for the growing number of working poor who are unable to make ends meet and need to supplement their inadequate food supplies.

Church members pick-up the food from Food for Others and deliver and distribute the food at Greene Hills. After the food outreach, we have family activities. We hold a basket ball and soccer clinic for the children and show family movies.

Maryland

From March 2009-October 2011, we held a food outreach at Penn Mar Apartments in Forestvillle, MD. Again the support of the apartment mangement was critical to serving the residents.

In November 2011, we began an new outreach at Shepherd's Cove, an emergency homeless shelter for women and children, in Capitol Heights, MD. Shepherd's Cove is run by the non-profit organzation United Communities Against Poverty, the official Community Action Agency (CAA) for Prince George's County, MD, and leading advocate for communities of people facing deficiencies in education, affordable housing, economic stability, and adequate health care access.

As always, we look forward with great joy, expecting to be used by the Holy Ghost to do the Father's will through and in us in obedience to Christ!

In 2008, TTC began a partnership with the Good News Jail and Prison Ministry in the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center (Fairfax, VA), and Prince George's County Correctional Center (Upper Marlboro, MD). Since then the Holy Spirit has been faithful in leading the work of this ministry through our jail ministry leaders Cathy Jones-Smith and John Nolan. People are being saved and are recommitting their lives to Christ to share his gospel with other inmates.

Cathy Jones   Cathy Jones-Smith leads our Fairfax County Jail ministry. Every first Sunday of the month, she ministers to the women's population, worshipping with them, singing with them, praying with them, fellowshipping with them. Cathy also coordinates our relationship with OAR of Fairfax, Inc. Their mission is to rebuild lives and break the cycle of crime with opportunities, alternatives, and resources for offenders and their families to create a safer community.

Jesus said that whatever we do to help those in prison, we do for him (Matthew 25:43-45). What an awesome privilege to serve the Lord by serving others!
